A side-by-side editorial comparison of Claude and GitHub Copilot — release velocity, themes, recent moves, and the top alternatives to consider.
Claude Duet opens a proactive-agent app to Pro and Max, the first move after the 5.5 rollout.
Claude shipped all three 5.5 tiers between September 22 and October 7 and paired Haiku 5.5 with monthly API credits for Max and Team plans. On October 21 it opened Claude Duet, a separate app where Claude acts as a proactive agent, as a research preview for Pro and Max subscribers. Earlier work merged chat and Cowork into one surface and opened a plugin directory with developer tooling.
Copilot adds GPT-6.1 Terra as a cheaper agentic default and makes assisted permissions GA.
Copilot ships on two tracks at weekly-or-faster cadence: models and agent surfaces on one, enterprise controls and reporting on the other. On October 26 the agent side moved: GPT-6.1 Terra went GA as a lower-cost model for everyday agentic and terminal work, and assisted permissions, where Copilot helps decide on its own command and file-access requests, went GA across the CLI, the Copilot app and VS Code. The week before was dominated by reporting: usage metrics that name custom agents and MCP servers, outside-tool usage, and industry benchmarks.

With the model family complete, the product focus is moving from what Claude can answer to what it does unprompted. Duet extends the agent work that started with Cowork into a dedicated app that initiates, and gating it to paid tiers ties it to the same subscribers who just received API credits.
Expect Duet to widen beyond the research preview, to Team or Enterprise plans or into the main app, and to connect with plugins from the directory. The entries do not yet signal the next model generation.

GitHub is pairing more autonomy for agents with more visibility for admins. Cheaper agentic models and fewer permission prompts make long-running agent sessions practical, while the model policy API and itemized usage metrics give enterprises the controls to allow them. Copilot also keeps following developers into third-party tools and chat apps.
Expect the November 16 model retirements already announced and further model additions tiered by cost; with assisted permissions GA, admin policy over what agents may run unprompted is the likely next control.
