What is thematic?
thematic exists to follow ggplot2 and the IDEs, and that is all it does now.
Every release since the 0.1.1 debut is compatibility work. 0.1.7 accommodates ggplot2 v4.0.0; 0.1.5 absorbs breaking changes in ggplot2 v3.5.0 and restores vdiffr compatibility; 0.1.6 adds basic Positron IDE support and tracks a systemfonts deprecation; 0.1.4 adds the httpgd graphics device, which is what makes the package work in GitHub Codespaces. Earlier fixes cover gganimate, ggiraph, geom_sf overrides and Shiny-runtime Rmd documents.

Two products are advancing in parallel. thematic's premise — automatic theming across R's plotting stack — means its maintenance burden is entirely other people's release schedules. The work splits cleanly into keeping up with ggplot2's breaking changes and reaching new rendering surfaces as they appear: httpgd for browser-based sessions, Positron as RStudio's successor. Roughly one release a year, each one reactive.

Meanwhile the builder releases have a consistent character: each removes a small repetitive action rather than adding a capability, which is what a mature editor's changelog looks like when the ambition has moved elsewhere.
