OpenProject settles into patch work after 17.7 shipped resource management.

resource managementcapacity planningpatch releasesenterprise add-onsopen source suiteself-hosted
Current state
17.7.0 was the substantial release — a resource management module with departments and work schedules, pushing OpenProject past task tracking into staffing. The two releases since are patches. 17.7.2 fixes four bugs, among them project-level hourly rates that could not be adjusted and non-working days silently dropped when saved while a reschedule job was running — both in the scheduling and cost areas 17.7 had just expanded.
Where it's heading
The release rhythm is a feature minor followed by a short tail of patches repairing the surface it just added, and this tail sits squarely in resource-management territory. Rate and non-working-day bugs are the predictable cost of shipping scheduling and cost tracking together. For self-hosted operators the advice does not change between these releases: take the patch.
Prediction
Expect one or two more 17.7.x patches against the resource management surface before 17.8 opens a new feature line.

Patch fixes hourly rates, non-working days, custom styles

The second patch on the 17.7 line, with four bug fixes. Two land in the area 17.7.0 just expanded: hourly rates that could not be adjusted per project, and non-working days silently dropped when saved while a reschedule job was running.

Patch fixes duplicate users on retried imports

A four-fix patch a day after 17.7.0, mostly cleaning up the Jira import path (duplicate users on retry, attachment authors not created) plus two permission and project-attribute fixes. Standard same-week stabilization after a feature minor.

Resource management module lands with departments and work schedules

    ⚡ SPARK

The clearest directional move in this window: OpenProject adds organizational structure it never modeled before — hierarchical departments, job-title and skills attributes, and per-user work schedules with working days, hours, and availability factors — then builds a Resource management module on top. It extends the annexation pattern of the last three minors from documentation into staffing.

XWiki integration links work packages to external docs

17.6 wires OpenProject to XWiki through a wiki-provider setting, adding a Wiki tab on work packages and two-way references between issues and pages. The internal wiki is refitted as a provider under the same interface, and Backlogs gains sprint goals. A real extension of surface, though the documentation capability itself is borrowed rather than built.

Patch fixes work package creation broken by 17.5

Five fixes days after 17.5.0, including work package creation and status transitions failing after the upgrade and a project rename breaking AMPF sync. The recurring shape here: a feature minor lands, a corrective patch follows within a week.

Project-based work package IDs arrive in Beta

Administrators can switch the whole instance from a numerical sequence to project-scoped work package identifiers, with existing numbers still resolving. The stated driver is preserving Jira issue keys through migration — an early step in the same suite-replacement arc that 17.6 and 17.7 continue. Still Beta, and some surfaces continue to show numerical IDs.
