A side-by-side editorial comparison of Appsmith and Bun — release velocity, themes, recent moves, and the top alternatives to consider.
Appsmith v2.5.1 locks down config loading and SMTP hosts around its MCP server.
Appsmith AI is fully retired, so AI work runs through direct OpenAI, Anthropic and Google AI datasources, and the embedded MCP server is the main AI surface. v2.5.0 widened what MCP can edit; v2.5.1 is a hardening patch: docker.env is now loaded as data (shell expressions stop startup), self-serve signup is rate-limited per IP, SMTP datasources obey the restricted-host policy, and MCP-authenticated Git requests can no longer check out remote branches.
Bun 1.4.4 adds bun fmt, a built-in Prettier-compatible formatter, two weeks after bun check.
Bun now covers formatting as well as type checking: v1.4.4 ships bun fmt, a Prettier-compatible formatter it says is 3-6x faster than oxfmt, and makes bun check 1.4-7.8x faster on large projects. The same release closes 271 issues, migrates Yarn Berry lockfiles, adds install retries with backoff, and cuts Bun.SQL CPU per query by up to 48%.

Appsmith is shifting from bundling its own AI to being a governed target that external AI clients act on. Each minor widens agent editing; each patch then narrows what that access can reach. Self-hosters keep absorbing upgrade work, now including moving JVM options out of docker.env.
The next minor will likely extend MCP tool coverage again, followed by another hardening patch; the entries don't give a date for dropping the MCP beta label.

After the Rust rewrite in July and bun check in v1.4.3, Bun is absorbing the remaining steps of a TypeScript toolchain one release at a time. Package-manager reliability work (Yarn Berry migration, retries, faster hoisted installs) shows it is also going after teams still on other package managers.
Expect a linter or lint mode next to round out the check/fmt pair, and more lockfile migrations aimed at pnpm and Yarn users.
