The channel gap is narrowing — SMS and WhatsApp are being given the same event surface and standalone send path email has had, which makes them first-class for segmentation and triggering rather than journey-only endpoints. Running alongside it is a quieter parity project in the other direction: capabilities that only existed inside the journey builder are being lifted out to the one-time send path, so the simple case stops being the weaker one. The bigger change remains that journeys are becoming stateful against the outside world.
