Shopify vs Solidus: at a glance
What is Shopify?
Shopify's October drop lets Sidekick test store changes on AI shoppers and has POS know buyers.
Shopify shipped a batch of more than ten updates on October 28. Sidekick can now draft a storefront change and compare it against the live theme using AI-simulated shoppers, and its suggestions draw on web search for market context. POS 11.17 recognizes in-store buyers who have checked out anywhere on Shopify Payments, attaching the sale to a customer profile when they take a digital receipt. Smaller pieces fill out commerce plumbing: WhatsApp marketing automations, subscriptions in draft orders, and a Flow trigger on product field changes.
What is Solidus?
Solidus admin 0.5.0 fills in settings editors and swaps pagination for Kaminari.
solidus_admin, Solidus's newer admin interface, shipped 0.5.0, its first feature release since 0.4.0. It adds editors for tax rates, payment methods, stores, zones, stock locations and option types, taxon management on the product page, and faster order and product index pages. It also breaks compatibility: pagination moves from Geared Pagination to Kaminari, and the floor rises to Solidus 4.6 and Ruby 3.2.

10.0E-COMM
Shopify's October drop lets Sidekick test store changes on AI shoppers and has POS know buyers.
◆ Current state
Shopify shipped a batch of more than ten updates on October 28.
◆ Where it's heading
The pattern across this batch and last week's agentic Knowledge base is Shopify turning its own scale into features: a buyer network that identifies shoppers offline, and AI agents that simulate shoppers and act on the merchant's behalf. Sidekick is moving from answering questions to proposing, building and pre-testing changes, while Campaign Autopilot and SimGym extend the same idea to ad spend and site testing.
◆ Prediction
Expect Sidekick-built changes to reach more surfaces than theme edits, and Shopify Network Intelligence to feed more features that recognize buyers across stores.
Solidus
5.0E-COMM
Solidus admin 0.5.0 fills in settings editors and swaps pagination for Kaminari.
◆ Current state
solidus_admin, Solidus's newer admin interface, shipped 0.5.0, its first feature release since 0.4.0.
◆ Where it's heading
The new admin is filling in the settings screens a store needs before it can replace the legacy backend, and it's taking breaking changes while still pre-1.0. The team is splitting large migrations into separate releases so stores can absorb them one at a time; the ViewComponent 4 upgrade was deliberately held back to its own release.
◆ Prediction
The release notes say solidus_admin 0.6.0 with ViewComponent 4 ships immediately after this one, and it will require stores to update their ViewComponent 3 storefront code.
