Elgg

COLLAB
Velocity5.0

Social networking engine for building custom online communities

Elgg ships paired 7.1.2 and 6.3.9 patches: both branches stay in maintenance mode.

open-sourcesocial-networkingself-hostedphpmaintenance
◆Current state
Elgg is a mature open-source PHP framework for self-hosted community platforms. The 7.0 major shipped in May 2026, and 7.1.0 in September added invitation-only groups, header images for generic entities and a MariaDB recommendation. 7.1.1 fixed profile access display and trash recovery, and on October 21 Elgg shipped 7.1.2 and 6.3.9 together, both with no release notes beyond the contributor list.
◆Where it's heading
Elgg follows a predictable cadence: a feature minor, then single-digit patch releases, with paired backports on the 6.3 branch. The 7.1 features centred on finer access control and generic entity handling, and the follow-up patches stay in those areas. The project favours stability over pace.
◆Prediction
More 7.1.x patches are likely, released in pairs with 6.3.x as happened again today. The entries give no signal about what a 7.2 would contain.

Elgg 7.1.2: small patch, paired with 6.3.9, no notes

A 7.1 patch released alongside 6.3.9, with no notes beyond two commits from one maintainer. It keeps the 7.x line in the maintenance rhythm that followed 7.1.0's feature release.

Elgg 6.3.9: paired backport patch for the 6.x line, no notes

The 6.3 branch gets its paired patch the same morning as 7.1.2, again with no published notes. Elgg keeps maintaining the previous major in lockstep with the current one.

Elgg 7.1.1 fixes profile access display, trash recovery and theming

The first patch after 7.1.0 fixes plugin names in the upgrade listing, access indicators next to profile fields, trash recovery destinations, and a CSS conflict with colour schemes. It cleans up the edges of the 7.1 feature set and adds nothing new.

Elgg 7.1.0: invitation-only groups and MariaDB becomes the recommended database

Elgg 7.1.0 is the first meaningful feature release after the 7.0 major. Invitation-only group membership and the MariaDB database recommendation are the two user-impacting changes — the former adds a long-requested access model, the latter signals an infrastructure direction for self-hosted deployments. Accessibility improvements and a query cache correctness fix round out a substantive minor release.

    Elgg 7.0.5

A narrow performance fix that stops Elgg from generating unnecessary AJAX response data for entities the likes system doesn't support — internal cleanup with no user-visible behavior change.

    Elgg 6.3.8

The 6.3.8 backport addresses installer input sanitization, client IP address correctness, and email notification reliability — all security or data-integrity adjacent. Maintaining the 6.x branch with these patches keeps Elgg safe for communities that haven't yet migrated to 7.x.
