What is AssemblyAI?

AssemblyAI stopped selling transcription and started selling the whole voice agent.

AssemblyAI shipped a Voice Agent API that delivers speech understanding, LLM reasoning, and voice generation over a single WebSocket at one $4.50/hr rate, built on its own models. Around it, streaming speaker diarization got an accuracy upgrade with per-word labels across US and EU regions, the LLM Gateway gained a json-repair post-processing step, and PII redaction can now return redacted and unredacted transcripts in one request.

What is Stalwart?

Stalwart is chasing mail RFCs and its own storage layer at the same time

Stalwart ships roughly weekly, and the releases divide cleanly between standards implementation and correctness work. v0.16.18 turns toward resource control — bounds on decompressed inbound DMARC and TLS report size, a cap on RocksDB block-cache memory, column families tuned per access pattern, and a queue scheduler that stops rescanning from the earliest pending event. The preceding releases added IMAP UIDONLY, UIDBATCHES and MESSAGELIMIT, plus JMAP email push and VAPID.

AssemblyAI vs Stalwart: editorial side-by-side

A0.0

AssemblyAI stopped selling transcription and started selling the whole voice agent.

◆ Current state

AssemblyAI shipped a Voice Agent API that delivers speech understanding, LLM reasoning, and voice generation over a single WebSocket at one $4.50/hr rate, built on its own models. Around it, streaming speaker diarization got an accuracy upgrade with per-word labels across US and EU regions, the LLM Gateway gained a json-repair post-processing step, and PII redaction can now return redacted and unredacted transcripts in one request.

◆ Where it's heading

The supporting releases are all steps up the stack from raw transcription: an LLM gateway with output repair, speaker labels precise enough for agent turn-taking, and redaction that no longer forces a second call. The Voice Agent API is where they converge — AssemblyAI is pricing an outcome per hour rather than an API per minute, and owning the models underneath is what makes that pricing defensible.

◆ Prediction

Expect the agent pipeline to gain configuration depth — interruption handling, turn detection, or telephony ingress — since a single all-in rate only holds up if the pipeline handles real call conditions. The feed also republishes launches a day apart, so entry counts here run ahead of actual releases.

S5.0

Stalwart is chasing mail RFCs and its own storage layer at the same time

◆ Current state

Stalwart ships roughly weekly, and the releases divide cleanly between standards implementation and correctness work. v0.16.18 turns toward resource control — bounds on decompressed inbound DMARC and TLS report size, a cap on RocksDB block-cache memory, column families tuned per access pattern, and a queue scheduler that stops rescanning from the earliest pending event. The preceding releases added IMAP UIDONLY, UIDBATCHES and MESSAGELIMIT, plus JMAP email push and VAPID.

◆ Where it's heading

Two threads run through every release. One is RFC coverage across IMAP, JMAP, CalDAV and WebDAV, implemented close to the specification including drafts. The other is a long tail of protocol-conformance fixes, many of them cases where JMAP and IMAP disagreed about the same state. The newest release adds a third: memory and scheduling limits, which is what a server codebase starts doing when deployments get large enough for defaults to hurt.

◆ Prediction

Expect continued RFC additions across the JMAP and IMAP surfaces, with more of the storage-tuning work that v0.16.18 started as RocksDB deployments scale.
