Shopify's October drop lets Sidekick test store changes on AI shoppers and has POS know buyers.
A side-by-side editorial comparison of Smile.io and Virto Commerce — release velocity, themes, recent moves, and the top alternatives to consider.
Smile is growing by wiring itself into everyone else's app — including Shopify's AI assistant.
Almost everything on this feed is joint content with another Shopify app: Redo on abandoned carts, Stay AI on subscription churn, Loop on returns, Digioh on zero-party data, Judge.me on reviews. Each follows the same structure — take a moment in the customer lifecycle that another vendor owns, and attach loyalty enrolment or point earning to it. The exception is a genuine product launch, a Sidekick app extension that lets merchants ask Shopify's AI assistant about loyalty program performance.
Virto Commerce opens two-factor sign-in to extensions after its Admin UI refresh.
Virto Commerce 3.1090.0 adds extension points for two-factor sign-in, so modules can plug their own second factor into the platform's login. It follows 3.1088.0's classic Admin UI theme update (responsive layout, collapsible menu, global search) and 3.1089.0's AnyCPU assembly fix, both backported to the 3.1076 branch the same morning. Earlier came sign-in log time zones, trend fixes and Azure SDK bumps on 3.1039 and 3.1007.

Smile has stopped positioning loyalty as a destination app and started treating it as a layer that attaches to other moments — a return, a cancellation, a review, an abandoned cart. That is a distribution strategy as much as a product one: each integration borrows another vendor's install base and their moment of customer intent. The Sidekick extension extends the same logic to the platform layer, putting loyalty data where merchants are already asking questions rather than making them open Smile.
Expect more co-marketed integrations with adjacent Shopify apps on the same lifecycle-moment template, and further work exposing loyalty data through Shopify's own surfaces. Omnichannel recognition across retail and DTC is the thread most likely to become a product push.

The platform ships near-daily from main and backports to at least three support branches (3.1076, 3.1039, 3.1007). Recent main-line work clusters around the back office and sign-in, from the sign-in log and Admin UI refresh to pluggable 2FA, suggesting an admin security and usability push.
Expect a module that uses the new two-factor extension points, and continued backports of the main-line fixes to the support branches.
